Hosted
by The Rotary Club of Kingston, The Molly is a fun tournament for
women, organized by women to benefit women and children in the greater
Kingston area. While entertaining and truly non-competitive, it
provides a terrific venue for women to support such worthwhile causes.
They continue to believe in the benefits of this tournament and return
every year, bringing more members of their family as well as friends and
colleagues to join in.
The sister tournament to the annual Syl Apps Classic,
The Molly commemorates the tireless volunteer work of Syl's wife Molly
and all women who dedicate endless hours to organizations helping women
and children.
The Molly's 2011 Beneficiaries
Kingston
Interval House
Kingston Interval House (KIH) has provided
safe shelter and services for abused women and their children since
1975. Services include a
24-hour crisis line, supportive counselling, safety planning, referrals
and advocacy. Outreach services include counselling for women and
children in both English and French, an Aboriginal program, court
support, and access to funds for safety needs and legal assistance. All
services are free and confidential. KIH has opened a 19-unit apartment building – Robin’s Hope - to provide short term, transitional and supportive housing for women and children leaving the shelter. This second stage housing will alleviate housing issues for longer term residents and improve access to the shelter for more women and children.
R.I.C.E.
The
Rotary Club of Kingston established Rotary Initiated Child Enrichment
in 2001 to complement the province's Early Years Initiative and focus on
children’s literacy programs. Most recently, R.I.C.E. has partnered with the Kingston Frontenac Public Library on the ‘Kingston Frontenacs Read’ role model initiative and also works with such agencies as Better Beginnings, the Boys & Girls Club and Partners in Mission Food Bank on book distribution programs. R.I.C.E. also created A Library Card in
Every Hand program that ensures every grade 1 student in the region
received a public library card and library visit. R.I.C.E. also responds to requests for emergency funding for families in serious need.
KGH Pediatric Unit
2011 marks the third year The Molly will dedicate partial proceeds from the tournament to the Kingston General Hospital Pediatric Unit as part of the Rotary Club of Kingston’s five year commitment to the project. The inpatient unit has been relocated, expanded and redesigned to better serve children in Southeastern Ontario. Thanks to the province’s 9 to 1 Redevelopment Matching Opportunity through the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation, local clubs have coordinated their fundraising activities with a goal of designating a new “Rotary” patient room or suite.
